Fall 2017 ORC Reveal – Minimal Modern Master Bedroom

I’m writing this post from my brand new, beautiful master bedroom! That’s right folks, the 2017 Fall ORC reveal is finally here. I can finally show you the results of our minimal, modern, bedroom transformation. If you haven’t been following along with the other designers (featured and guest), now’s the time to check out all the final reveal goodness. I personally cannot wait to brew some tea and settle into a night of pure design voyeurism. Anyway, back to my reveal.

Design Challenges

There were two main challenges with my master bedroom. First, at 10.5′ x 13.5′ it’s relatively small, and second, it’s located in the darkest part of the house. Here are some BEFORE pics:

Fall 2017 One Room Challenge – Week 6: Ikea Cable Management

I don’t know about you but I love watching television in my bedroom. I know, I know, I’ve heard it too: the bedroom is supposed to be a sacred, peaceful place free of media (ie. dopamine inducing stimulation) in order to encourage peaceful and restorative sleep. I get that, which is why I try to stop watching at least an hour before sleep time. Most times I’m successful, other times? Not so much. But I truly enjoy a good movie, or an occasional Netflix binge watch (Gilmore Girls anyone?), and sometimes I just need that kind of mindless enjoyment. Judge me if you will, but the tv in the bedroom is staying put.

The main problem was dealing with all the cords from the television, including a wide network cable that was wound up the floor, which we had gotten used to seeing but was downright ugly. Ideally, it would have been nice to bury that cord in the drywall, but unfortunately that’s just not in the budget. Plus, I found a pretty decent way of dealing with the cord issue, thanks to Ikea’s cable management solutions:

Fall 2017 One Room Challenge Week 5: Accessories

We are now into week 5 of the ORC and normally everyone would be in absolute scramble mode but this year marks the very first year the ORC has been extended to 7 weeks, owing to the unusual number of natural disasters that are causing upheavals in delivery time. SO, that gives me an extra week to add some final touches to my master bedroom project. This week I get to talk about accessories.

In the last few weeks of my master bedroom refresh I have planned, re-painted and DIY’ed, and now I’m ready to make things look pretty. This is the fun stuff. As you may know, I absolutely love the work of designer Amber Lewis. I am always checking out her projects for ideas, and I think I’ve come up with a general formula for her style:

-Nothing too trendy.
-Lots of neutrals – nothing too colourful
-Keep things light and airy
-Let the eye flow around the room with a perfect combination of light and dark, masculine and feminine, and…
-Use natural elements (plants, woven rugs, baskets, handmade pillows and blankets) throughout
